The second Vatican Council changed the form of the Catholic mass through changing the liturgy as well as theological concerns. In the centre of this paper is the religious practice of the Society of St. Pius X. who, with reference to the Catholic tradition has decided to act up against the very same thing therefore creating their own identity through this deferral. While communication opens situations to reinterpretation, rituals as a special form of communication provide a certain closure. Tradition characterized as a nonreflexive and ritualized behavior has to become reflexive in order to legitimize their identity as “the tradition”. Once a tradition is questioned it loses its stabilizing quality and constantly refers to contingency: if one thing is being questioned, others might follow, therefore threatening the social order as a whole. We will see how they in their everyday religious life manage to resolve this problem and stabilize their identity through shared orthopraxis.
